Conservation Gap Analyses of Threatened Asian Oaks

[Updated August 2026] Following the successful completion of the Gap Analyses for Native US oaks in 2019 (available here), a new project was launched in 2023 to complete a Gap Analyses for Asian Oaks. Tropical Asia represents the world’s second biodiversity hotspot for Oak species. With increasing numbers of Oak species appearing on the IUCN Red List, the region lacks a comprehensive horticultural infrastructure to incorporate these growing numbers of threatened species in ex-situ populations, partly due to a lack of distribution data and integration of local knowledge, but also as a result of our fragmented understanding of species’ germination and ecological requirements. This new report treats a select group of Oak species assessed as threatened (Vu, En, Cr) in SE Asia, in addition to a subset of Data Deficient (DD) and several exceptional species, and analyzes their threats, coverage of populations in (un)protected areas and presence in ex situ collections, making recommendations and setting conservation priorities.
